Become a Volunteer Firefighter

Grey Highlands Fire & Emergency Services staff are part-time on-call employees of the Municipality.  The majority of staff members are firefighters trained to perform many of the duties you would associate with the fire service including but not limited to:

  • Fire fighting - structure fires, vehicle fires, grass / wildland fires,
  • Tiered Response - respond to assistance requests to medical emergencies for Grey County EMS (ambulance)
  • Auto extrication - motor vehicle accident rescue operations

Training for the recruit firefighter program takes approximately one year to complete with training occurring one evening a week and occasional weekends.

In addition support staff perform many important duties including (but not limited to):

  • traffic control,
  • operations communications and records
  • firefighter on-scene location tracking
  • firefighter on-scene medical monitoring rehabilitation

Training for the support staff program takes approximately six months to complete with training occurring one evening a week. Length of training is dependent on the number of roles the support staff is trained to perform.

Recruitment for firefighter and support staff occurs once per calendar year, dependent on the number of vacancies.

Eligibility requirements:  

  • Must be 18 years or older at time of application and legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Successful applicants will have obtained their Ontario Secondary School Diploma (grade 12 OSSD) or equivalent at time of application
  • Valid G2 Driver's Licence with a clean driver's abstract and a willingness to obtain Class D driver's licence with Z endorsement 
  • Have no criminal record for which a pardon has not been granted
  • Live within the primary response area (8km from either fire station)
