Grey Highlands 25th Anniversary

Euphrasia Township was surveyed in the 1840s and opened to settlement soon afterward. Early development focused on agriculture and natural resource use, with farming families establishing grain and livestock operations across the township’s rolling landscape. Communities such as Kimberley grew around mills, churches, schools, and local businesses that served surrounding concessions. The Beaver River and the Niagara Escarpment have long shaped land use patterns and remain defining elements of Euphrasia’s history and identity.

Established in 1840 during the Sydenham Survey, Osprey Township was laid out as part of the region’s early administrative framework. Settlement advanced gradually as forests were cleared for agriculture and farmsteads spread along concession roads. Small villages, including Feversham and Heathcote, emerged as service centres supporting surrounding rural communities. Agriculture remained the foundation of Osprey’s economy for generations, influencing settlement patterns and daily life well into the modern era.

Markdale developed in the mid‑19th century as a service village within Artemesia Township, strategically located along the Toronto–Sydenham Road, later known as Highway 10. The village’s early growth was closely tied to surrounding agricultural activity, with mills, trades, churches, hotels, and general stores serving local farm families. The arrival of the Toronto, Grey and Bruce Railway in the 1870s strengthened Markdale’s role as a commercial centre, improving connections to regional markets and supporting continued business and community development. Over time, transportation links, local industry, and community institutions established Markdale as a hub for southern Grey County.
