Grey Highlands Fire and Emergency Services Enhances Firefighter Safety with New Decontamination Washer
GREY HIGHLANDS, ON (July 8, 2026) – The Grey Highlands Fire and Emergency Services Department has strengthened its commitment to firefighter health and safety with the addition of a new Solo Rescue Decon Washer, with funding support provided through a $10,000 grant from Enbridge Gas.
The washer is used to clean and decontaminate firefighting gear and personal protective equipment (PPE) following emergency incidents, helping remove harmful contaminants that firefighters may be exposed to while responding to fires, vehicle collisions, and other emergencies.
The value of the equipment was evident immediately. On the same day the washer was installed, it was put into service following a vehicle fire. Since then, it has also been used after another vehicle fire and a structure fire, demonstrating the important role it will play in supporting firefighter health and operational readiness.
“Protecting the health and safety of our firefighters remains one of our highest priorities,” said Fire Chief Wellwood. “This equipment allows us to quickly clean contaminated gear and return it to service, but more importantly, it helps reduce our members’ exposure to harmful substances. Investments like this support the long-term health of our firefighters and ensure they have the resources they need to continue serving our community safely and effectively.”
As awareness continues to grow around the long-term health risks associated with exposure to fire contaminants, decontamination equipment has become an important part of modern firefighter safety practices. By enabling gear to be cleaned promptly after emergency incidents, the department helps reduce occupational health risks while maintaining response readiness.
The department also recognizes the important role grant funding plays in helping municipalities and emergency services invest in specialized equipment. Opportunities such as the Enbridge Gas grant allow fire departments to enhance firefighter safety and adopt best practices that may otherwise be difficult to achieve through regular operating budgets alone.
“Grants like this make a real difference,” added Chief Wellwood. “They provide opportunities for fire departments to invest in equipment that directly benefits our members and the communities we serve. We are sincerely grateful to Enbridge Gas for its support and for recognizing the importance of protecting emergency responders. This investment will have a positive impact on firefighter safety for years to come.”
The Grey Highlands Fire and Emergency Services Department extends its appreciation to Enbridge Gas for its commitment to community safety and well-being through initiatives that support local emergency services and strengthen community resilience.
