Council Highlights November 1, 2023

This is a summary of the meeting items and not inclusive of all agenda items. All items are contained in the minutes.
- There were two speakers for Open Forum. Doug Griffiths spoke regarding item 12.2 - Additional staff for arena operations, and Cathy Little spoke regarding item 12.1 - Beaver Valley Sustainable Tourism Strategy.
- Council received a delegation from Bannikin, the consultants for the Beaver Valley Destination Stewardship Strategy, on a long-term vision and action plan to guide stakeholders over the next 5 years.
- The Committee of the Whole minutes from October 25th were ratified to adopt the values of Vision Zero, and staff were directed to use these values in the establishment of future policies.
- Council received the Integrity Commissioner Periodic Report for April 1, 2021, to May 31, 2023, from Principles Integrity, the municipality’s appointed Integrity Commissioner.
- Council approved the Terms of Reference for the newly created Markdale Jubilee Task Force. The task force will develop an action plan, fundraising strategy, and recommendations for Markdale’s 175th Jubilee celebration to take place in 2024.
- Council received the Third Quarter Financial Report for information.
- Council received the Q3 quarterly By-law Enforcement report from James Special Services Inc (JSS), the municipality’s appointed By-Law Enforcement.
- Council received a report on the Beaver Valley Sustainable Tourism Strategy from the Director of Economic Development. Council adopted the Beaver Valley Sustainable Tourism Strategy that was presented during the delegation and directed staff to bring back a draft memorandum of understanding (MOU) and present to the project partners as well as an opportunity for public input.
- A report was received on additional arena staffing to increase operations. Council approved hiring four part-time seasonal staff to cover the additional hours of arena operations up to a total combined maximum of 32 hours/week.
- Coming out of a closed session, Council directed staff to enter into a purchase and sale agreement with OPG, conditional upon Council approval at a future Council meeting.
