Horseback Riding in Grey Highlands

What better place to enjoy horseback riding than in Grey Highlands, a beautiful setting with a quiet pace. A variety of horse activities from hour long trail rides, overnight horseback riding vacations to horse trials, jumping and dressage events can be found in Grey Highlands. These happenings are sure to please horse enthusiasts of all levels. Nearby are competitive trail riding and endurance events. Boarding and lessons are available at facilities in the area.

Whinny Acres

See part of the beautiful Beaver Valley on horseback. Whinny Acres country retreat offers trail rides plus the opportunity for longer stays with horseback riding in the hills, swimming, hiking, and more. Choose one of many options from a one hour trail ride to a multi-night horse vacation. Whether you have never ridden a horse before or are an experienced rider there is something here for you.

Checkmate Equestrian Centre

This facility is one of the top equestrian event sites in Canada. Checkmate Equestrian Centre is located on Grey Road 12B near Feversham and operates on 500 acres in the scenic countryside of Grey Highlands. Horse trial events with dressage, cross-country and show jumping are hosted.

Competitive Trail Riding

Ontario Competitive Trail Riding Association, is the sanctioning body for Endurance Riding, Competitive Trail and Ride ‘n’ Tie in Ontario. Events are listed on their web site. These events are held in various locations in the area or close at hand.

Horseback Riding on the CP Rail Trail

The rail trail is a multi-use trail including horseback riding. It starts in Dundalk, goes through Ceylon and Markdale and ends in Owen Sound. Grey County maintains the trail and is working to improve it.

Horseshoeing Championships

Each September, Flesherton’s Split Rail Festival is host to the Ontario Horseshoeing Championships. Soak up the sights, smells and sounds of the blacksmithing art as the very best farriers from across Canada gather to showcase their skill, speed and style; turning bars of raw steel into horseshoes of differing sizes and uses. It’s exciting, entertaining and educational!
