Tourism & Recreation in Grey HighlandsFall Fairs Visit the local fall fairs for some old-fashioned fun. Farm animals are always a favourite of small children. Fall fairs have evolved and changed since the first fair was held in the area, but the basic ingredients remain the same... animals, flowers, vegetables, baking, kids and lighthearted entertainment. Youngsters take pride in showing their animals and hours can be spent preparing a prize calf or horse for a show. Agricultural societies started holding fall fairs as soon as families settled locally. It was a way to showcase their abilities as cooks, gardeners, farmers and herdsmen. It also encouraged excellence as participants competed for bragging rights as the first place winner. Please refer to the Grey Highlands' coming events list for a full list of dates. Markdale Fall FairFriday evening is the Ambassador of the Fair competition and stage show. Saturday horse shows, gymkhana, goat show and 4-H shows take place. In the arena, hall exhibits showcase the best in their class for baking, sewing and more. A heavy horse pull takes place Sunday. The Markdale Agricultural Society holds the fair the last full weekend of August each year at King Edward Park in Markdale. Feversham Fall FairAn old time country fair with activities for all ages. Antique and farm tractor pulls are a highlight of the fair. You’ll also see 4-H calf shows, light horse show, tug of war, Junior and Senior Ambassador competitions. The fair is held mid September at the Feversham fairgrounds. Rocklyn Fall FairVisit Rocklyn and reminisce about days gone by. Men’s pie baking contest, Junior Farmers’ olympics, 4-H calf shows, pet show, baby & toddler show. Exhibits feature the area’s best baking, needlework, flowers and vegetables. Rocklyn’s fair is held during the end of September at the Rocklyn Memorial Community Centre. |
