Tourism & Recreation in Grey Highlands

Kayak and Canoe in Grey Highlands

Paddling in Grey Highlands offers a beautiful and peaceful experience ... nature at its best. The Beaver River is challenging during spring run-off, perfect for experienced paddlers. In summer, it becomes quiet and is easily traveled by novice canoeists.

Paddle in a quiet lake, the perfect location to take your family for an outing. Visit Lake Eugenia, Irish Lake, Wilcox Lake or Bells Lake for a relaxing day of canoeing.

The Beaver River

Canoeing on the Beaver River affords an opportunity to relax and commune with nature at the same time. Enjoy the scenery of rugged forest which opens up to farmland with panoramic views of the Beaver Valley. Deer, great blue heron, great horned owl and beaver are abundant.

The Beaver River flows through the Beaver Valley to Georgian Bay. Boulders and barbed wire make navigating from Heathcote to Thornbury, difficult and not advised.

Three access points are: Beaver Valley Road (Grey Road 13), just north of Kimberley; Epping side road; and Heathcote (the dock is on the right before the bridge.) The distance from Kimberley to Heathcote is 20 km. A downloadable map showing the locations of the canoe access points is available. Canoe access points are managed by Grey Sauble Conservation Authority.

Lake Eugenia

Lake Eugenia is the largest inland lake in Grey County. The irregular shoreline and central island make it difficult to see how big this lake really is. Great for exploring. Lake Eugenia offers fun for the whole family. Relax at the beach under the trees, or go for a swim after your paddle. Fishing is great here as well.

Access the lake at the public beach just off Canrobert, east of Beaver Valley Road (Grey Road 13). A launch fee applies if you use the dock area to launch your canoe. Most paddlers set-off from the beach.

Irish Lake

This small peaceful lake has a boat launch suitable for canoes or kayaks. Swim and fish also if you like. Perfect for the novice paddler or for those with small children. In a quiet setting with no motorized boats allowed. Located north of Priceville. A small launch area is located close to the road.

Wilcox Lake

Another quiet and relaxing place for an enjoyable paddle around a small lake. A boat launch area is located near Wilcox Lake Road.

Bells Lake

A long narrow lake which makes for quiet waters. On Concession 12 west of Markdale.
