Burn Permits

A burn permit is required for all burning within the Municipality of Grey Highlands.

As required by the Ontario Fire Code, open-air burning is only permitted with approval from the Fire Chief which is granted in the form of an authorized burn permit obtained from the Municipality of Grey Highlands.

How to Apply:

  • In person: Building Services Office located at 50 Lorne Street, Markdale, Monday to Friday between 8:00 am and 4:30 pm.
  • Mail: Completed applications to the Building Services Office located at 50 Lorne Street, Box 409, Markdale ON, N0C 1H0.
  • Email: Completed applications to pubed@greyhighlands.ca
  • Fax: Completed applications to: 226-909-0662 Attention: Public Educator or Fire Chief.

Where payment is applicable, the permit will be processed upon receipt.

Accepted payment: cash, cheque, debit (in person). If paying by cheque, please make cheque payable to "Municipality of Grey Highlands."

Two types of permits are available:

Campfire/Burn Barrel/Bonfire Permit (small fire less than 1 meter in diameter):

For a campfire/bonfire, the burn radius shall not exceed 1 meter in diameter and where very young children (toddlers) will be present, a barricade suitable to prevent them from reaching the fire or any hot surfaces shall be erected surrounding the fire area. For burn barrels, the materials shall be contained in a barrel with a capacity no greater than 205 litres.

A permit in this category is available for a fee of $20.00 and is valid for one full year.  The fee is also applicable for farm properties wishing to have a campfire/burn barrel/bonfire on their property.

Open Air Burn Permit (larger fires, greater than 1 meter in diameter):

A $20.00 fee is applicable for a permit in this category and a reasonable timeframe to complete the burning will be determined upon application processing. The fee will be waived in the event that burning is required for agricultural purposes occurring on a farm property, however farms are still required to obtain a permit.

Failure to Comply:

Failure to obtain a burn permit could result in penalties under the authority of the Fire Protection and Prevention Act 1997 which states: "An individual convicted of an offence is liable to, in the case of an offence for contravention of the fire code, a fine of not more than $50,000 or to imprisonment for a term of not more than one year, or to both." In the event the Fire Service responds to extinguish open air burning being conducted without a permit, or in violation of the conditions of the permit, the full costs of extinguishment, including labor costs and equipment costs, as determined by the Chief Fire Official may be charged to the property owner and/or permit holder.

See Reports and Downloads to the right for information regarding burn permits and forms.
