General Public Fire and Life Safety Info:

Your best defense against fire is education and implementing good fire safety practices. Your knowledge of fire safety information will help prevent fires and keep you, your family, and our community safe from unnecessary fire loss.

Many fires occur at night when everyone is asleep, so early warning is crucial to survival. The Ontario Fire Code requires working smoke alarms on every storey of the home and outside all sleeping areas. For added protection, our fire department is recommending that you also install a smoke alarm in every bedroom. Larger homes may require additional smoke alarms. Carbon Monoxide alarms should be installed outside of sleeping areas, and next to service rooms, in all homes with attached garages or fuel burning appliances.

Grey Highlands has an exceptional Fire Department. However, despite their best efforts, firefighters might not arrive quickly enough to rescue you or your family if a fire occurs in your home. Grey Highlands is a large rural geographic area, with response times affected by distance, weather, and traffic. Fire and smoke spread quickly, often doubling in size every 30 seconds. When it comes to residential fires, there is no time to spare, every second counts. Your best defence is early detection (working smoke and CO alarms) and home escape planning.
