Candidates InformationWhen can nomination papers be filed?Nomination papers may be filed Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. from January 4th, 2010 to September 9th, 2010 and on Nomination Day, September 10th, 2010 from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Municipal Office, 206 Toronto Street South, Unit 1, Markdale. What is the Nomination Process?Candidates qualified to file a nomination must complete the prescribed nomination paper and declaration of qualification, and pay the required filing fee ($200 for Mayoral Candidates, $100 for all other candidates, in the form of cash, certified cheque or money order made payable to the Municipality of Grey Highlands) prior to 2:00 p.m. on Nomination Day, September 10th, 2010. Nomination papers are available on-line or can be obtained at the Municipal Office, 206 Toronto Street South, Unit 1, Markdale. NominationEither the candidate or an agent of the candidate must file the nomination paper in person. The declaration section of the nomination paper must be signed in front of a Commissioner of Oaths. Certain members of staff within the Clerk's Department can administer this oath. If an agent is filing the nomination paper on behalf of a candidate, the candidate's declaration must be commissioned prior to the agent filing the paper with the Municipality of Grey Highlands. Faxed nominations cannot be accepted, as an original signature is required on all election documents. DeclarationAt the time of filing, the candidate will be required to complete a Declaration of Qualification. This declaration ensures that only qualified candidates run in the municipal election. If an agent is filing on behalf of a candidate, the declaration must be commissioned prior to the agent filing the nomination paper and the declaration of qualification. Declaration of Qualification (Mayor and Council) CandidatesAlso, the candidate will be asked to complete a Freedom of Information (FOI) Release Form to authorize election staff to post their name and contact information on the Municipal Website. Withdrawal of NominationPlease note withdrawal of nominations by candidates must be done before 2:00 p.m. on Nomination Day, September 10, 2010, in writing. AcclamationIf, after the close of nominations on Nomination Day, the number of candidates nominated for any office is equal to or less than the number that are required to be elected for that office, the Clerk shall, after 4:00 p.m. on Monday, September 13th, 2010 declare that candidate or those candidates elected. When can candidates start campaigning and raising funds?Candidates can start campaigning and raising funds as soon as their nomination papers are filed. What are the filing fees?All nominations must be filed in person, or by an agent acting on behalf of the nominee at the Municipal Office, 206 Toronto Street South, Unit 1, Markdale. The nomination filing fee is $200 for mayoral candidates, $100 for councillor and school board member candidates. Payment must be made by cash, debit, certified cheque or money order payable to Municipality of Grey Highlands. When is the Municipal Election?Voting Day is Monday, October 25, 2010.
